Last Sunday afternoon, I spent an hour and 17 minutes stuck in the back of a taxicab. I was trying to get from the airport to my hotel. Three big events in the city combined with roadwork, road closings, and quadrillions of people converged into one huge mess.
There was nothing to be done but wait it out.
Welcome to New York.
If you’ve been reading Glimsen for a while, you know that I like to capture glimpses of beauty in the details of life and share it in both words and images.
Sometimes finding beauty can be challenge. Even though it's all around us, we often don’t notice unless we look for it. Unless we pay attention.
Take that cab ride, for instance. When we finally broke free, the driver took back roads through some neighborhoods with gorgeous historic homes, and we passed a park or two. The urban setting made the green of the trees, plants, and flowers stand out even more.
When the driver finally delivered me to the Walker Hotel, I saw large black planters with close-cropped boxwood shrubs against the brick of the old building. And the black double doors with stained glass panels, pictured above. It was a welcome sight, let me tell you.
When you’re on a trip, travel logistics often require your full attention, so it’s easy to focus solely on what you’re doing and not notice much about where you’re staying. And let’s face it—many hotels are not that special.
But when I have a minute or two in the lobby, my room, or outside, the little touches of beauty of a hotel can often surprise me.
The Walker is an Art Deco-inspired boutique hotel. Even if you don’t care for the style, these photos may inspire you to look for beauty not just on your next trip but anywhere you happen to find yourself.
Where have you found beauty in the details lately or on a trip? I’m always interested in hearing about other people’s experiences with beauty, so leave me a comment below.
