"I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers." ~ L.M. Montgomery
It’s October, and there’s a buzz in the air. People are talking about sweater weather, pumpkin spice lattes, and football.
Every season brings its own beauty with it, and to me, the arrival of fall awakens the senses to sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures that are richer this time of year.
But it’s hot, y’all. Unseasonably hot—at least where I live. And although I love summer, I don’t love summer in October.
So, like most people, I’m eagerly anticipating the feel of a nip in the air and the sight of leaves changing colors.
The leaves might just be my favorite thing about fall. But so far—nothing. So far they’ve gone straight to brown and fallen in clumps.
While I do love seeing brilliant oranges, yellows, and reds on the trees, I also love hearing the crunch of leaves underfoot.
We have a few dozen trees on our property and so many leaves that a squirrel scampering through them sounds as big as a deer.
And even though leaf blowers are loud, a distant one is a welcome sound of fall to me.
The smell of cinnamon and apples, whether it’s from the oven or a candle, sends me to a place of fall rapture. Of course, if the fragrance is coming from a pie that I get to taste, well, that makes me even more joyous.
On a chilly evening, the fragrance of a neighbor’s fire wafting through the air makes me think of a cozy spot on the sofa under a blanket with a mug full of something wonderful.
The tactile textures of fall draw me in as well—soft knit scarves, plaid flannel shirts, and thick chunky sweaters.
Of course, with highs in the 80s, I can hardly bear the thought of a thick chunky sweater, but I’m pretty sure I could be persuaded to taste a piece of apple pie. You know, in celebration of the fall beauty around us.
What about you? What are your favorite things about fall? I’d love to hear. Leave me a comment below.
