"The wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves. We have had our summer evenings; now for October eves!"– Humbert Wolfe
It’s mid-October, and there’s a buzz in the air. Do you feel it?
Every season brings its own beauty with it, and to me, the arrival of fall awakens the senses to sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures that are richer this time of year.
This morning, my husband and I went to our local nursery center. Because the deer in our neighborhood would make a feast of pansies, we have resorted to planting kale. Did you know there are many types of kale? I didn’t know it either until this morning. And now I am a fan.
Not only that, but the mums! They were putting on a show. Look at this deep red color with the yellow centers.
Because summer was unbelievably hot this year, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the feel of a nip in the air and the sight of trees as the leaves change colors.
The leaves are by far my favorite thing about fall. But so far there’s not much color. Soon, though, the ground will look a little like this…
While I do love seeing brilliant oranges, yellows, and reds on the trees, I also love hearing the crunch of leaves underfoot.
We have a few dozen trees on our property and so many leaves that a squirrel scampering through them sounds as big as a deer.
And even though leaf blowers are loud, a distant one is a welcome sound of fall to me.
Another fall favorite is apples. The smell of cinnamon and apples, whether it’s from the oven or a candle, sends me to a place of fall rapture. Of course, if the fragrance is coming from a pie that I get to taste, well, that makes me even more joyous.
On a chilly evening, the fragrance of a neighbor’s fire wafting through the air makes me think of a cozy spot on the sofa under a blanket with a mug full of something wonderful. A chai latte with whipped cream seems just about right.
The tactile textures of fall draw me in as well—soft knit scarves, plaid flannel shirts, and thick chunky sweaters.
And though it’s not exactly cold right now, it’s been chilly enough for me to wear a long, striped cardigan every day this week.
Now, if I could just get a piece of that apple pie, my celebration of fall beauty would be complete.
What about you? What are your favorite things about fall? I’d love to hear. Leave me a comment below.
