Last Sunday morning. My husband, awake at his usual 5:00 a.m., was downstairs reading in his big, comfy chair beside the fireplace. We didn't have to be at church for a while, so I hit the snooze button once or twice and took my time getting up.
At around 7:30, I was wide awake. The light coming through the open blinds provided a view I hadn’t seen in a long while: the trees were backlit and outlined by morning light shining through a thick covering of fog.
The scene's dreamlike, ethereal quality made me linger a bit longer.
After a while, I headed down to the kitchen for breakfast. As I made a cup of English Breakfast tea and the usual bowl of oatmeal, I looked out the kitchen window to the back yard.
And called Mart to come see.
In the soft light, the leaves looked like dabs of yellow, orange, and red paint on a dark canvas. They seemed to glow softly.
I could make out other trees in the fog behind, but what was in front of me--the colorful, yet muted leaves--stood out in relief from the rest of the scene.
Sometimes life seems a little like that. The future may seem shrouded in fog, but I can still see what’s in front of me. I want to concentrate on that, on the present, rather than wondering and worrying about the future. I want to trust God in the fog and enjoy the moments that make up my life as they happen.
Moments like a sleepy Sunday morning with a dreamy view.
