Spring. Bare branches are leafing out or blooming, flowers are unfurling, little bits of green are sprouting, and spring rains and bright sunshine are encouraging growth where there was none just a month ago.
It’s my favorite season.
But there is so much grief, sadness, and loss in this world; my heart is often heavy.
Still, nature goes on—putting on a show of renewal, growth, beauty, even celebration--a reminder that Easter is coming.
The changing of the seasons speaks of ancient, timeless, immutable rhythms set in stone--or rather, in creation. Those rhythms, that cycle, comes around every year at roughly the same time. Without fail. Regardless of what’s happening.
That consistency of the seasons, that constancy, brings me comfort, especially in such difficult times.
One of my favorite ways to pull my eyes off the hard things and to take a break, even if just for a few minutes, is to spend time outside in creation, in that beauty. To step away for a little while, take deep breaths, be quiet, pray, enjoy the sunshine, and listen to the birds.
Granted, a few minutes outside won't bring about world peace; it won’t put money in the bank, or change a diagnosis, or bring back someone or something you’ve lost.
But it can do this: it can refresh and calm you physically and mentally. It can remind you of the gifts you have. It can inspire you to try something new or look at a problem differently. It can fill your lungs with fresh air, slow down your blood pressure, and clear your busy mind. It can help you tackle whatever is waiting for you back home or at the office.
I’m speaking from experience here. Unless it’s raining, I get outside every day.
Let me encourage you, friends. Whether you’re in an urban, suburban, or rural setting, step outside into the beauty and renewal (and warmer temperatures) of springtime. It’s a gift. Do yourself a favor and unwrap it.
