The latest in a monthly series of my favorite pieces of art.
Do you have a favorite piece of art that has a story behind it?
Today, I thought I'd tell you about one of mine. Early in our dating days, my husband Mart and I went to arts festivals. (These festivals are great fun, and I've written about them before here and here.) As we walked among the booths, he and I would talk about ourselves and point out any art that grabbed our attention. It was a fun way to get to know each other better, enjoy a beautiful spring day, and maybe take home a new piece of art.
Whenever we saw a piece we liked, we did a kind of dance as well. When he said, “Do you like this?” or I asked, “What do you think?”, what we really wanted to know was “Do you like this enough to live with it if we get married?”
At Inman Park, a juried show in a historic neighborhood with beautiful homes, one of the things I was drawn to was a multi-colored, shallow glass bowl. The sunlight lit up the bright colors--red, royal blue, turquoise, and green. I knew this piece would add more life to my sunroom, but...
Even though I loved it and looked at it more than once, I decided not to buy it. I wanted to be wise with my money. Over the next week or so, I thought of it again but eventually put it out of my mind.
Then, four months later, on my birthday, I unwrapped Mart’s gift: the glass bowl. He had gone back to the festival the next day and bought it for me. (Did you figure that out already?)
He says he thought there was no way I’d still be dating him four months later, but if we did break up before my birthday, he’d just keep the bowl because he liked it too.
Little did he know that I wasn’t going anywhere.
And now the glass bowl sits on the glass coffee table in our family room, where the sun from the large window lights it up every morning. It’s one of my favorite pieces, not just because of its color and vibrancy but because my husband went back for it, with the hope that someday it would be sitting in the home we shared together.
What is your favorite piece of art in your home? It could be a print, a piece of pottery, a photograph, etc. Why is it your favorite? I’d love to know. Leave me a comment below.
