Have you ever gotten a letter or note that encouraged you? One that had words or artwork that held beauty for you?
I have a box filled with cards and notes I’ve received through the years and a paper file labeled “Pick-Me-Ups” with work-related notes. On the wall behind my desk hangs an inspiration board with other notes and some photos.
Even though I love to get encouraging emails, there’s something about being able to pull out, hold, and keep special words that make your day.
My husband has a knack for picking out cards, whether for our anniversary, my birthday, or some other occasion. My first Mother's Day card from him remains a favorite because he wrote positive things about my parenting. I really needed to hear those things then, as we were learning how to be newlyweds with a five-year-old in the house.
Through the years, my daughter has given me many notes to treasure as well. One that she made in art camp in third grade rests in the stand-up file tray on my desk, where it has been for about eight years. Made from pastels, it's a picture of a sunset across the sea, complete with a desert isle and a palm tree. In the colorful sky, she wrote: "Mama, you take good care of me!"
Whenever I get a note that's meaningful, I either display it somehow or keep it accessible so I can pull it out any time. Re-reading those words of love or encouragement--of beauty, in some form--lifts my spirits again.
In addition to receiving, I love to give and send encouraging cards and letters to others. But that's another post for another day.
What words of encouragement have you received that meant a lot to you? Do you have them where you can access them easily? I’d like to hear all about it.
