“What’s your favorite thing about July 4th?” I asked people this week.
“Fireworks!”
“The parade.”
“The patriotism.”
“Good food, good company.”
In addition to these things, I like the atmosphere of excitement and anticipation, the smiles on people’s faces, and the relaxed summer vibe.
Last year, we had the privilege of going to a July 4th party at our friends’ home in Italy while we were on vacation there. It was a fabulous evening that ended with a big surprise. You can read about it here.
This year, I spent Independence Day with family in a small town that knows how to do holiday celebrations well. I saw a lot of flags on front porches and tee shirts.
Even though this is a hard and painful time in our country’s history, I’m grateful for the freedoms we enjoy in America. It’s easy to take those freedoms for granted and to lose sight of what we have, simply because we’ve always had them.
In spite of problems and political polarization, there’s still no place in this world that I’d rather live. Happy Birthday, America!
What’s your favorite thing or memory about July 4th? Let me know in the comments.
